More About Laura Reyes

My name is Laura Reyes, and I’m a proud Traditional Upward Bound alumna of the Cal ĢƵ TRIO Upward Bound Program. I am a first generation student born in Northern California and raised in Oxnard, where I graduated from Hueneme High School as a proud Viking. My college journey took me back up north to CSU Chico, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and Spanish, and later back to Southern California to complete my Master of Science in Counseling and College Student Personnel degree at California ĢƵ University.

Today, I serve as the Academic Specialist for the Math and Science Upward Bound programs. I love connecting with students and staff across our sites in Oxnard, Santa Paula, Fillmore, and the South Bay of Los Angeles. It’s inspiring to see the diversity of the communities we serve and to be part of helping students reach their academic and personal goals.

More About Cesar Almanza Lopez

Born in Tijuana and raised in Oxnard, I’m the proud son of two immigrant parents who sacrificed everything to give me access to higher education. As a Channel Islands High School graduate and TRIO Talent Search and SSS alum, I was honored with the TRIO Promise Award before earning my B.A. in Spanish from ĢƵ and becoming credentialed to teach high school Spanish. Beyond my education, I take pride in being a role model for my two younger siblings, showing them—and the students I work with—that higher education is within reach. Today, I’ve come full circle, giving back to the same TRIO programs that once supported me, and dedicating my career to helping students pursue their goals and create new opportunities for their families.

More About Daisy Castillo

I am from the citrus capital of the world—Santa Paula, California. I am a proud daughter and granddaughter of resilient farmworkers and community advocates. I proudly identify as a first-generation college graduate, a transfer student, and a higher education professional passionate about helping students achieve their goals. After graduating from Santa Paula High School, I enrolled at Ventura College and later transferred to my dream school, the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). I now hold a master’s degree in Educational Counseling from the University of Southern California (USC), where I conducted research and wrote a thesis on the testimonios of first-generation Latina transfer students. My work is rooted in love for my community, a commitment to equity, and a desire to help students reach their full potential. As the new Academic Specialist, I look forward to building meaningful connections with Upward Bound students and creating a supportive environment where they feel safe, supported, and empowered to reach their goals.
